Film Screening & Director Talk, Oct 7: JARA - Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan

Sep 27, 2025

A screening and talk event for the documentary film JARA – Radioactive Patriarchy: Women of Qazaqstan will be held on Tuesday, October 7 from 19:30 in Shinjuku, Tokyo, with the film's director, Aigerim Seitenova, in attendance.

Between 1949 and 1991, a total of 456 nuclear tests were conducted by the former Soviet Union in Kazakhstan. JARA (meaning a wound) addresses the devastating legacy of 40 years of nuclear testing on Kazakh land, with a particular focus on the gendered impacts of radiation: state-sponsored and technology-driven gender-based violence, the social and cultural consequences of militarisation, and the resilience and leadership of women within affected communities. Click here for more information about the documentary film.

Director Aigerim is herself a third-generation survivor of nuclear exposure. In this documentary, she explores gender-related issues within the context of nuclear damage, interviewing women affected by the nuclear tests.

During the event, Aigerim will speak about the impacts of nuclear testing and engage with the audience to explore what actions we can take to eliminate such harm.
