Feb 11, 2021

Peace Boat and the environmental NGO Friends of the Earth Japan (FoE Japan) have launched the next in their series of video testimonies of the current situation in Fukushima in various languages.

The ninth instalment in the series, this latest video features an interview with Mr Nakamura Jun, Co-Chair of the "Fukuichi Area Environmental Radiation Monitoring Project." It is being released in English, French, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean, German and Spanish, adding to the original Japanese.

Mr Nakamura has been monitoring radiation levels in Fukushima for seven years, since feeling that “the government and TEPCO were not being honest with the measurements.” However, he states that “as for the soil [radiation dose], it doesn't seem to have gone down very much.”

Mr Nakamura also shares his concerns about the planned Tokyo Olympics, being referred to as the “Recovery Olympics.” He says, “by successfully completing the torch relay, the Japanese government is trying to give the impression that the disaster at Fukushima is over. I want to make it clear that this is a terrible mistake.”

Please listen to this testimony, to hear the voices and ongoing situation of the community in Fukushima (about 6 mins).
