"For we shall not repeat the evil" - 79 Years Later in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Aug 1, 2024

August 6 and 9 will soon mark the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Peace Boat, as a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), has been calling for the prohibition and abolition of nuclear weapons, including through our voyages together with Hibakusha, the atomic bomb survivors.

Yet, the nuclear threat continues to grow, whether in Ukraine, Gaza, or East Asia. In order to ensure that the tragedy will never be repeated, we will hold a number of events around these upcoming anniversaries to send a strong message both within Japan and internationally.

A full overview of the events can be read in Japanese language here. They include public lectures, a forum on the link between the climate crisis and nuclear weapons, a dialogue with parliamentarians from each of Japan's major political parties, and a concert with a piano which survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima.

On August 6 and 9, the anniversaries, Peace Boat will collaborate with ICAN, UNITAR and local partners to hold a special livestream from the a-bombed cities, including a moment of silence marking the time that the atomic bombs were used on those cities in 1945. These live sessions will deliver the atmosphere and the feeling of the Hibakusha on that very morning from several venues in each city, as well as introduce local youth initiatives to carry on the legacy of the survivors.
