Peace Boat supports Global Citizen’s 2022 Campaign: “End Extreme Poverty NOW — Our Future Can’t Wait”

Mar 29, 2022

Peace Boat is pleased to join the 2022 campaign of International advocacy organisation Global Citizen. Launched today, the campaign, End Extreme Poverty NOW — Our Future Can’t Wait calls on governments, private sector leaders, and billionaires to make the commitments urgently required to ‘End Extreme Poverty NOW’. The year-long campaign will focus on three critical issues on which the world can no longer afford to wait to make change:
1) breaking systemic barriers that keep people trapped in poverty;
2) taking climate action now; and
3) empowering adolescent girls across the world,
adding a crosscutting strong element of civic space and defence of advocacy.

Throughout 2022, Global Citizen will rally millions of citizens to demand that the world's top political and business leaders stop delaying action with longer-term timelines and focus on what we need to do here and now. Peace Boat will be working together with Global Citizen to support the campaign throughout the year.

This year’s campaign will include several key moments, including Global Citizen Prize and Global Citizen Now to take place in May in New York, and which will bring together leaders and activists from different countries. It will also feature its festival to take place in September (following its 24 hour festival last September) and events to be organised at the G7 and G20 Summits in Germany in June and Indonesia in November respectively, the latter with China, Japan and Korea as members. Global Citizen is eager to expand its movement to Asia and to collaborate with Peace Boat on onboard and on-land activities and programmes to end poverty now and strengthen civil society in Asia.

“The global agenda to end extreme poverty, defend the planet, and tackle inequity is in peril. And despite progress in a few countries before COVID-19 hit, the world was and continues to be wildly off-track from the 2030 target,” said Hugh Evans, CEO and Co-Founder of Global Citizen. “This moment of crisis demands new urgency and a renewal of purpose. We need a new compact built on mutual trust and respect – one that lifts up the voices of the people whose lives depend on its success and who suffer from its failure. An agenda built by and with them, to a timeframe set by those who understand all too well that every lost minute is a whole new tragedy.”

“Defeating poverty and inequity, and protecting our planet are vital to building a peaceful world. We wholeheartedly support Global Citizen's 2022 Campaign and look forward to working together!" said Yoshioka Tatsuya, Peace Boat Founder and Director.

Global Citizen is a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030. Through their dedicated platform, Global Citizens learn about the systemic causes of extreme poverty, take action on those issues, and earn rewards for their actions — as part of a global community committed to lasting change (those actions are mostly taken via its app which you can download here to join the movement). Since 2011, millions of Global Citizens around the world have taken over 24 million actions to target world leaders to end extreme poverty by 2030. To date, the actions by our global community, along with our high level advocacy efforts and with our partners, have resulted in commitments and policy announcements from leaders valued at over $48 billion that will have impacted more than 880 million people by 2030.
