Fuelling War and Climate Breakdown: Feminist Perspectives on Accountability and Action

As part of the Global Week of Action for Peace and Climate Justice, we invite you to join peace and climate advocates for an online discussion exploring the connections between fossil fuels, militarism, war and climate breakdown from a feminist perspective.
Fossil fuels do not only drive the climate crisis: they power militaries, sustain wars and genocide, and can be used as instruments of oppression and collective punishment. At the same time, armed conflicts cause extensive emissions and environmental destruction that are frequently excluded from climate reporting and accountability.
Bringing together perspectives from Palestine, Lebanon and Ukraine, as well as the wider peace and climate justice movements, the webinar will examine the gendered and unequal impacts of these interconnected crises on people, communities and the environment.
The discussion will explore the historical and structural relationship between fossil fuels, militarism, colonialism and war. It will address the role of energy and fossil fuel trade in enabling Israel’s genocide in Gaza; the intersections of war and climate breakdown in Lebanon; and efforts to document the emissions caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine and secure accountability for the resulting climate damage.
The webinar will also introduce the Break Energy Oppression campaign, which advocates for a multilateral regulatory framework governing fossil fuel trade under international humanitarian and human rights law. Its core demands include recognition of energy sovereignty as a fundamental human right and expression of self-determination; legal criteria distinguishing legitimate energy embargoes from collective punishment; mandatory due diligence and end-use certification for fossil fuel exports; and protection for workers exercising conscientious objection by disrupting supply chains supporting wars and genocide.
Deborah Burton will introduce Tipping Point North South’s new Transform Defence publication, Ending Fossil Fuels and Abolishing War: A Crossroads Reached. The report examines the military–fossil fuel relationship in its historical context and argues that ending fossil fuel dependence and abolishing war must be understood as interconnected struggles.
Looking ahead to COP31, the speakers will consider how analysis and action can challenge the systems that perpetuate war, fossil fuel dependence and climate injustice—and what peace and climate justice movements should demand from governments and the international climate process.
