Event - Beyond the Ice: Antarctica as a Blueprint for Peace and Conservation (Tokyo) and Photo Exhibition in Hiroshima

Apr 20, 2026

Can the most remote place on Earth provide the answers to our most pressing global challenges? Peace Boat is delighted to be part of organising a special evening of exploration and dialogue: "Beyond the Ice: Antarctica as a Blueprint for Peace and Conservation." On May 7, 2026, we will gather at the Cervantes Institute in Tokyo to discuss how Antarctica serves as a rare beacon of international cooperation. In an era of global uncertainty, the Antarctic Treaty remains a profound example of humanity choosing science, peace, and preservation over conflict.

Why Join Us? Through a curated panel of experts in conservation, diplomacy, and polar exploration, we will dive into why this pristine continent is not just a land of ice, but a vital model for our shared future.

This event is being co-organised by the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC), Agenda Antarctica, FoE Japan and Peace Boat, to precede the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM48), taking place in Hiroshima in May 2026.

Event Highlights:

  • Expert Panel Discussion: Insights into the fragile ecosystem and the diplomatic hurdles of protection.

  • Meet and Greet Session: A special opportunity to engage directly with all panelists, fostering informal conversations and networking.

"Photography Exhibition: ‘From Antarctica to Hiroshima: Reflections on Peace and the Environment’
Coinciding with the 48th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) taking place in Hiroshima. Peace Boat cooperated with ASOC (Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition) and FoE Japan to co-organize a photo exhibition to highlight the extraordinary beauty and value of the continent.

This exhibition shows works by photographer Mizumoto Shunya, who has travelled to over 100 countries and regions worldwide and has visited Antarctica nine times. Through images of Antarctica’s majestic natural landscapes and penguins printed on ‘Inshu Washi’—a traditional craft paper from Tottori Prefecture—the exhibition aims to foster international dialogue on peace and environmental conservation.

The exhibition runs from May 11 - 15th, and is on the second floor of the "Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park Rest House" (just a five minute walk from the ATCM venue). It is free of charge to visit.
