Peace Boat to highlight youth capacity building at the UN Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona

Mar 14, 2024

Three years after the start of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will bring together the Ocean Decade community and partners to celebrate achievements and set joint priorities for the future of the Decade. It will take place on 10-12 April 2024 in Barcelona, Spain.

The Youth for SDGs program for the UN Ocean Decade, which was launched last year and has taken place onboard Peace Boat’s voyages in the Arctic, Central America and South America, was recognized by UNESCO as an endorsed contribution to the UN Ocean Decade

Peace Boat will hold an official satellite event at the conference in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOOA) on the topic of youth capacity building and intergenerational collaboration with the title “Scaling up global ocean action and innovation through intergenerational collaboration to bridge science gaps – Knowledge sharing with SIDS, LDCs, ECOPs and youth”.

The goal of this session is to create dialogue and knowledge sharing across generations, organizational schemes, and geographies to celebrate the achievements and reflect on the challenges surrounding Ocean Decade Actions. This session will highlight what makes successful interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships through the lens of intergenerational and geographically diverse work. Peace Boat will share experiences of capacity building and work on youth empowerment in particular with the Youth for SDGs for the UN Ocean Decade and the Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme.

The side event is open to all and it is not necessary to be registered for the conference to attend the side event. Please register with Peace Boat and NOOA here using the code PBUS.

We are delighted that the award-winning documentary "Against the Tide: A Journey of Climate Hope" will be screened at the Ocean Decade Movie Day at the Filmoteca de Cataluña. The film shows the story of the first Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Program in 2017.  A group of young leaders from states on the front line of climate change and marine degradation joined Peace Boat's 95th Global Voyage in Barcelona as a part of a new programme to highlight these crucial issues. These young women and men, between 19 and 26 years of age, were from the regions of the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean. Over the following three weeks, they visited Lisbon, Bordeaux, London, Edinburgh, Reykjavik and New York. In every port, they connected with civil society organizations and government agencies bringing their message to citizens and government representatives throughout the voyage. The film portrays their experience and raises awareness about the fragility and vulnerability of the small island states.
