Support Food for Gaza

Aug 11, 2024

People living in Gaza in Palestine are in constant danger of their lives due to the ongoing attacks by the Israeli military. It is difficult for people to obtain even the very basic amount of food to survive, and the shortage of vegetables is especially serious. Please support us in delivering fresh vegetables to the people of Gaza living in unacceptably inhumane conditions.

The Situation in Gaza

As of the end of July 2024, close to 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli military offensive against Gaza, which began in October 2023. Seventy percent of these are children and women. The entirety of Gaza is surrounded by an Israeli-built wall, and the area has been described as a "prison without a ceiling."

While the residents have nowhere to flee to, the Israeli military has launched attacks on civilian facilities including hospitals and schools, as part of its attacks on Hamas. Civilians fleeing from their homes are subject to merciless and indiscriminate attacks, having to relocate even three, four or more times with their children and families in different areas of Gaza. It is reported that attacks are being conducted even on these evacuation areas, and people are facing severe shortages of the basic materials required to survive, including food, shelter and medical care.

According to the UN World Food Program (WFP), "A total 96 percent of the population of Gaza is facing acute food insecurity, with 2.15 million people at Crisis levels of hunger or worse. Almost half a million of these are in Catastrophic conditions" (reported on June 25, 2024).

Delivering Vegetables to the People of Gaza

Peace Boat has been conducting grassroots citizens exchange and providing support for Palestinian refugees for more than twenty years.

Since the beginning of the recent attacks on Gaza, we have strongly condemned Hamas' attacks on Israeli civilians, and strongly opposed the Israeli military's indiscriminate attacks on civilians in Gaza.

However, as the attacks have become more prolonged, the severe shortage of food and medical supplies in Gaza is leading to needless deaths as a result of starvation and disease.

As a way to assist even from far away, we are working with trusted local partners in Gaza to launch an emergency food aid programme.

Vegetable shortages worsening

According to the United Nations, nine out of ten children in Gaza are malnourished or stunted due to severe shortages of food. Knowing that the lack of vegetables, essential for children to grow and maintain their health, is worsening, Peace Boat has decided to support the deliver of fresh vegetables through the local Palestinian NGO "Youth Without Borders," based in Gaza's Khan Younis.

Approximately US$35 (about 5,000 JPY) can provide a set of vegetables for one family, equivalent to support five people for around four to five days.

We call for support to provide as much support for households and families in Gaza, as well as to continue to speak out and appeal for a ceasefire and an end to violations of international humanitarian law as soon as possible.

One package will provide the following vegetables (type and quantity subject to change depending on availability and price fluctuations):
3 kg tomatoes / 2 kg potatoes / 2 kg eggplants / 0.5 kg green peppers / 1 kg bell peppers / 2 kg molokhia / 2 kg onions / 2 kg cucumbers / 1 bunch of garlic / 1 kg lemons
