The Global Week to #Act4SDGs

Sep 28, 2021

The Global Week to #Act4SDGs (17-28 September) is organized by the UN SDG Action Campaign, of which Peace Boat is an official partner. Held during the high- level week of the United Nations General Assembly, the week aims to drive collective action, mobilizing key stakeholders from all sectors to drive change while reminding world leaders that people around the world are doing their part to accelerate progress on the SDGs.

To mark the week, Peace Boat staff members made a video message and online group photo to share our message for the Sustainable Development Goals. The video featured staff who had recently taken part in Peace Boat’s SDG Staff Training Program developed for staff to learn more about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its relationship to Peace Boat’s work including global voyages, in port and onboard education programs and various projects.

Two online events were organized by Peace Boat during Global Week to #ACT4SDGs. The first, co-organized with Waseda University Institute of Korean Studies, focused on the recent hosting of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics which brought to light a range of social and political issues in the process of creating a society which respects diversity - from issues of nationalism, sexism, and measures to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.  The second event, with a focus on SDG16 and SDG5, looked at  the current situation in Afghanistan, the "war on terror" and the situation of women in Afghanistan. Guest speakers included Ann Wright, former US colonel and senior diplomat who was involved in reopening the US Embassy in Afghanistan in 2001 and resigned over the Iraq War.  An IG Live in collaboration with Peace Boat US featuring Peace Boat youth alumni focused on SDG14.
