Nihon Hidankyo Nobel Peace Prize Celebration Tour
Nihon Hidankyo, the grassroots organisation of atomic bomb survivors, was awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize - congratulations! As an organisation working closely with Hibakusha, Peace Boat is overjoyed by this news, and will use this opportunity to further expand our actions at home and abroad to realise a world free of nuclear weapons.
Since 2008, Peace Boat has organised the "Global Voyage for a Nuclear-Free World: Peace Boat Hibakusha project" onboard our ship on 19 occasions, each time with the support of Nihon Hidankyo, and with many of the association's members joining us to sail onboard to convey the reality of nuclear weapons to many people around the world.
The Nobel Prize award ceremony will be held in Oslo, Norway, on 10 December. Nihon Hidankyo will form a delegation of around 30 people, including the Association's representatives and Hibakusha from Japan and elsewhere, to attend the ceremony and join the celebrations.
At the same time, there are many other Hibakusha, as well as second and third generation survivors and citizens or representatives of organisations who have worked closely with Nihon Hidankyo until now, are also keen to be part of this historic occasion in Oslo. For this reason, we have decided to organise the "Nihon Hidankyo Nobel Peace Prize Celebration Tour." This will be conducted in cooperation with Peace Boat and the Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Gensuikyo) and Peace Boat, in consultation with Nihon Hidankyo. While tour participants will not participate in the ceremony itself, they will celebrate the award from the city of Oslo and take part in various related events open to the public.
The approximately 50 person delegation will include Hibakusha, second generation atomic bomb survivors, and members of organisations working for nuclear weapons abolition. The programme includes attendance at the award ceremony public viewing, the torchlight parade, and participation in events organised by Norwegian peace organisations.
