Remembering Dr Johan Galtung
It is with great sadness that Peace Boat has learned of the passing of our dear friend and guest educator, Dr. Johan Galtung.
Often known as the "father of peace studies" for his visionary work on conflict and peacebuilding, we were honoured to welcome Johan onboard as a guest educator on our 29th Peace Boat Voyage and our 35th Global Voyage. On that voyage, the devastating events of 911 had not long ago occurred, and Johan’s wisdom and insight in interpreting that global upheaval for our participants will always stay with us.
We extend our sincere condolences to Johan's wife, Fumiko Nishimura, who worked tirelessly to make Johan's ideas accessible in Japanese, and to Johan’s wider family and his colleagues in the TRANSCEND network. We were honoured to know and to work with Johan, peace activist and visionary. We will remember him with intense respect, and also with deep affection.
