Earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria 2023: PBV Emergency Relief Fund Launched
As widely reported in Japan and elsewhere, communities in Türkiye (formally known as Turkey) and Syria experienced very strong earthquakes on February 6, 2023. Extensive damage has been reported in both countries. More than a hundred aftershocks have been recorded as of February 7. Rescue efforts are still underway in snowy conditions. The emergency adds further enormous pressure to areas of north-west Syria already relying on humanitarian assistance to meet their most basic needs due to the impact of 12 years of conflict, according to the United Nations.
Peace Boat Disaster Relief (PBV) has been in touch with local NGOs and UN agencies to gather information on the damage and launched an emergency relief fund to support those in the affected communities, and is launching an emergency appeal for donations to support those impacted by these devastating earthquakes.
More information will be shared on the PBV page shortly - click here.
Peace Boat regularly visits Türkiye as part of our global voyages in particular Istanbul, Kuşadası and Izmir, holding various programmes with local communities including homestays with local families. Peace Boat has been supporting refugees from Syria through our relationship with Doctors of the World and during visits to Jordan and Greece.
Peace Boat expresses our deep condolences to all those impacted by these earthquakes and the ongoing humanitarian situation in the impacted area.
We seek your generous support to help those in dire situations. Thank you very much.
