Taiko, Sumo, and Korean Dance: Celebrating Peace Boat's First OMATSURI: Takadanobaba International Cultural Festival
On Saturday, October 3, Toyama Park in Takadanobaba, Shinjuku, played host to the inaugural OMATSURI ~Takadanobaba International Cultural Festival. After weeks of persistent rain, clear blue skies provided the perfect backdrop for a vibrant day of community celebration.
While Shinjuku is home to many international residents and students, opportunities for meaningful intercultural exchange remain limited. This festival was envisioned as a welcoming space for people from all backgrounds to connect, build friendships, and strengthen community ties.
Booths around the park featured local restaurants of various cultural backgrounds, international handicrafts including from community and non-profit groups, and informative displays from neighborhood support organizations.

The stage came alive with a diverse lineup of performances: traditional Japanese Taiko drumming, Korean folk dances, sumo demonstrations, Andean music, live sets by a youth band from Myanmar, and mesmerizing bubble art displays, drawing enthusiastic crowds throughout the day.
Children took photos with performers, tried their hand at sumo wrestling, and chased giant bubbles across the lawn.
As the first ever such event, many visitors attended through their connections with Peace Boat alumni and past participants. The event successfully welcomed 4,800 community members over the course of the day.

Ueno Dai, chair of the event’s organizing committee, reflected on the initiative's impact as a vital first step in deepening roots within Peace Boat's local neighborhood of Takadanobaba and Waseda: "Through our preparations, one group introduced us to another, giving rise to new networks of collaboration. Working alongside local partners allowed us to connect with community members beyond our usual global voyage programs."
In response to rising social division and xenophobic discourse in Japan, Ueno and the team see the festival as a positive local action: "While we reached out primarily through existing contacts for this first edition, we aim to broaden our reach to more local residents and multicultural communities for future events."
Bringing diverse neighbors together for a day of joy and shared understanding, the new OMATSURI project serves as a warm, welcoming foundation for peacebuilding at the grassroots level right in Peace Boat’s home neighbourhood of Takadanobaba, Tokyo.
