Press Release - Peace Boat to arrive in Costa Rica: Event "Voices of Peace: Testimonies and Perspectives from Survivors”

Jun 21, 2024

Peace Boat will arrive at the port of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on June 27, with two Hibakusha (survivors of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and seven "Youth Ambassadors" from Ukraine travelling onboard.

In collaboration with UNED, the United Nations University for Peace (UPEACE), and Mundo sin Guerra y Violencia (World without War and Violence), we are organizing the event “A Global Journey with Peace Boat, Voices of Peace: Testimonies and Perspectives from Survivors” at the Universidad Estatal a Distancia, Sede Universitaria Puntarenas (State Distance University, Puntarenas Campus).

During the event, two testimonial forums will be held. In the first forum, we will hear personal testimonies from two survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as part of the “Global Journey for a Nuclear-Free World: Peace Boat Hibakusha Project.” These narratives are essential for understanding the real impacts of nuclear weapons and for transmitting this crucial history to future generations.

In the second forum, the Ukraine Youth Ambasadors delegation will share their perspectives on the current situation in Ukraine. Their aim is to raise awareness about the Russian full-scale military invasion aggression continuing today in Ukraine and to make a clear call for peace and an end to the war.

Thanks to the generous cooperation of the Embassies of Costa Rica and Ukraine in Tokyo, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Costa Rica Ms Lydia María Peralta Cordero will attend the event.

In addition to this event, a special donation of approximately 60 pieces of recycled judo wear will be donated to the Costa Rican Judo Foundation, at the request of the NPO JUDOs (headed by Japanese judo champion Inoue Yasuo). The cooperation between JUDOs and Peace Boat was launched through the efforts of volunteers, who will be presenting the judo wear in person during the ship's call to Puntarenas.
