Wang Miao: promoting a scientific and friendly approach to the ocean through diving
Onboard from Shenzhen until Port Victoria in Seychelles, Wang Miao joined Peace Boat as a Guest Educator to share her experience as the founder of NGO Better Blue, as well as a Mermaid Life Coach and Polar Travel Guide.
Promoting a scientific and friendly approach to the ocean through diving, Better Blue holds over 200 marine conservation public activities annually, including marine citizen science, marine public education, industry development support and endangered species and habitat protection. Wang Miao became the first Chinese national to receive the "Young Champions of the Earth" award in 2018, the UN's highest environmental honor to youth under 30. She has spoken at the United Nations General Assembly and been covered by major media, television, and magazines.
During her time onboard, Wang Miao gave a series of talks sharing her first-hand experience as a diver, while using many visuals to introduce the realities of marine pollution and the wonders of the oceans and their ecosystems. She also explained how diving can be used as a tool for marine research and conservation, and based on her experience as a polar guide in Antarctica, gave examples of how climate change is visible in the polar regions.
