Cultural Magic at Sea: Celebrating Polynesia with Coco Tirao
Peace Boat was honored to welcome back Anthony Moehauarai “Coco” Tirao aboard the 122nd Global Voyage as a returning Guest Educator. President of the acclaimed cultural troupe Ahutoru Nui, Coco brought the spirit, history, and living traditions of Tahiti to the heart of the Pacific, creating an unforgettable cultural experience for all on board.
Coco’s artistic journey began at just four years old. Today, he is recognized as a master of the Heiva tradition, an accomplished wardrobe designer, and a powerful storyteller of the ancient oral art of ‘Orero’. Through lectures, workshops, and performances, he shared not only technical knowledge but also the cultural meaning behind Polynesian dance, music, and costume.

Passengers had the rare opportunity to learn the intricate craft of traditional costume making, guided by Coco’s decades of experience. These hands on sessions fostered both creativity and cultural understanding, allowing participants to appreciate the care, symbolism, and skill woven into every garment.
A highlight of the voyage came during the New Year’s Eve celebrations, when Coco collaborated with renowned Rapa Nui pianist Mahani Teave. Together, they presented a vibrant performance of Polynesian music and dance that energized the entire ship and welcomed the new year in true Pacific style.
The spirit of community extended beyond the stage. Onboard volunteers worked together to cut more than 1,000 pieces of ribbon, enabling 500 participants to handcraft their own ribbon leis in preparation for the ship’s arrival in Tahiti. This collective effort reflected Polynesian values of sharing, cooperation, and celebration.

Coco often says that his passion is his true wealth. His generosity in sharing that passion deeply touched passengers and crew alike. By the time Peace Boat arrived in Mā’ohi Nui, participants were no longer simply visitors. They carried with them a deeper connection to the rhythms, traditions, and living culture of the islands.
