Statement on Iran: Condemning Violent Suppression of Citizen Demonstrations, Calling for a Peaceful Resolution
Since late last year, protests by citizens in Iran for improvements in the economic situation have spread nationwide. It is reported that violent suppression of these protests by the Iranian government has resulted in thousands of casualties to date. Although the full extent of the situation is not clear, we are deeply concerned by this development.
The peaceful exercise of protest is a fundamental right of citizens. The Iranian government must immediately cease its suppression of these protests, and genuinely address the grievances of citizens. Currently, communications remain blocked, preventing contact with people inside the country from outside. The Iranian government must lift these communication restrictions, fully disclose information both domestically and internationally, and fulfill its obligations of accountability.
Furthermore, we are deeply concerned about the treatment of political prisoners and those detained during the demonstrations. To prevent unjust punishments and executions, we call for the dispatch of an investigation team through international organizations such as the United Nations. The Iranian government should cooperate fully with such international investigations.
We call for the swiftest possible peaceful resolution of the situation. This must be achieved in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter, which mandates respect for sovereignty, and any threat or use of force by any nation must not be allowed.
Last year, military attacks contrary to international law were launched against Iran, citing its alleged nuclear development programme. Such intervention through force not only fails to solve the problem, but rather exacerbates it. We call for the guarantee of human rights, the promotion of dialogue, and a resolution of challenges through non-military means.
