Peace Boat Statement at UN Consultation on Our Common Agenda: Frameworks for a peaceful world
On February 22, 2022, Peace Boat presented a statement at a United Nations thematic consultation regarding the report issued by the UN Secretary General last year, "Our Common Agenda". The third consultation taking place on this day focused on "Frameworks for a peaceful world–promoting peace, international law and digital cooperation."
International Coordinator Watanabe Rika delivered Peace Boat's intervention, beginning by expressing concern regarding situation around Ukraine. The statement then highlighted the significance of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), emphasising the importance of assistance to victims of nuclear weapons and remediation of the environment and drawing attention to the World Nuclear Survivors Forum that Peace Boat held last December in partnership with ICAN. Reminding us of the initiatives led by Hibakusha over the years, the statement includes a call for money for armaments to be diverted to public health and climate actions, and concludes by urging Member States to agree to set disarmament as a major and essential agenda to achieve the SDGs and global peace..
