Peace Boat hosted a documentary film screening and talk event on December 6, 2009 with Iceland's bestselling author Andri Snaer Magnason and Japanese cultural anthropologist Takemura Shinichi, both of whom were onboard Peace Boat's 66th Global Voyage in 2009 together as guest educators. Andri was awarded his second Icelandic Literary Award for his best selling 2006 book Dreamland, which harshly criticizes the Icelandic policy of relying on heavy industry for economic growth. Receiving wide acclaim, the book influenced Iceland's government to change its environmental policy, and motivated world-renowned musicians Bjork and Sigur Ros to take action on this issue. Andri's visit to Japan marked the November 2009 publication of the Japanese translation of Dreamland. |

Iceland is a “dreamland,” where most of the country's land is covered with untouched nature, class divide is not vast, the world's first female president was democratically elected, and 100% of the nation's electricity demand is supplied by natural energy. However, Iceland is currently facing crisis where ninety percent of it's geothermal areas and glacial rivers are under the scope of the government and a grasp of corporations to be harnessed for aluminum smelters. The beautiful nature and landscape has been incorporated into the blue print to accommodate the government and corporation's convenience and has developed into a politically-charged issue. |

Andri and Mr. Takemura talked about Iceland as a political, economic, and sociological microcosm of the world, arguing that Iceland as an island can be used as a model to understand issues of conflict, interest, independence and dependency around the globe and Japan.
