María Elisa Pinto-García, founder and CEO of Colombian art-based social change organization the Prolongar Foundation, joined Peace Boat's 101st Global Voyage as a guest educator from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Cartagena, Colombia, sharing her experience related to peacebuilding and the link between art and conflict transformation. Currently, the central art-based practice of Prolongar Foundation is the Japanese Kintsugi technique, which invites us not to discard objects that have been broken, but rather to repair them and to enhance the damaged areas by filling the cracks with gold.

SOA Joins Peace Boat for UN World Oceans Day


SOA Programme Director, Brandon Levy, joined the 101st Global Voyage of Peace Boat as a symbol of the partnership between Sustainable Ocean Alliance and Peace Boat. Brandon joined Peace Boat's Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors and hundreds of participants on a voyage from Ponta Delgada to New York City, where they docked to host a special event for UN World Oceans Day on June 8, 2019.

On May 31, Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors arrived to Ponta Delgada, in the Azores Archipelago, onboard the 101st Global Voyage. During the day, the group were hosted by professors from the University of the Azores from whom they learnt about the many challenges that this group of nine islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean are facing in relation to climate change.

On June 7, in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Partnerships, the international NGO Peace Boat will host a special event for global youth leaders to come together to highlight local initiatives for the SDGs , including Goals 5, 13 and 14. This interactive dialogue on why the ocean matters and how to make a difference for our oceans will encourage youth engagement in raising awareness of the benefits derived from the ocean and our individual and collective duty to take action, with the overarching theme of this year's UN World Oceans Day, “Gender and Oceans.
