A Peace Boat representative attended a one-day conference in Athens entitled "40 Years of CSCE : Present -Day challenges for European Security and all-European Cooperation" was to mark the 40th anniversary of the Helsinki Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe. That conference in 1975 culminated in the Helsinki Final Act which saw the heads of 35 States (the NATO countries, the Warsaw Pact countries, neutral and non-aligned States) commit themselves to mutually beneficial dialogue. This led in the 1990s to the establishment of the Conference for Security and Co-operation in Europe which later became the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) .

First to speak was The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms. Sia Anagnostopoulou who reminded the audience of the history and context in which the Helsinki Final Act came about and the challenges to peace in Europe now. The Ambassador of Finland in Athens Mr Pauli Makela spoke about the importance of the Helsinki Final Act and Finland's commitment to its principles.

The speakers on the panel included Mr Helmut Scholz, Member of European Parliament of Die Linke and GUE/NGL, Professor Antonis Bredimas, International Law, University of Athens and Mr Christos Savvakis, member of the Board of the Observatory of International Organizations and Globalization- PADOP. PADOP is a long-time partner of Peace Boat and has supported events organised during the ship's call at the port of Piraeus. Also in attendance were representatives of the embassies of the Russian Federation and of Cyprus. The issues addressed at the conference included in crisis in the Ukraine, the need for disarmament, the ongoing threat of nuclear weapons and human rights especially related to the current refugee crisis. Peace Boat staff member Karen Hallows spoke about the importance of cooperation between civil society organisations and regional organisations such as OSCE to regional and global peacebuilding.

The event was organised by The Department of Peace and International Affairs of Syriza. The department has welcomed Peace Boat during it's visits to Piraeus and was instrumental in the organisation of the testimony session by survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to the Greek parliament in May this year. The Coordinator of the Department of Peace and International Affairs of Syriza Panos Trigazis invited all those present to welcome Peace Boat when the ship next visit's Greece on September 28, 2016
