The Global University is an intensive peace studies
programme which combines study onboard the ship during one of our
voyages with exposure programmes in selected regions that the ship
visits.
At the heart of our educational philosophy is the belief in the importance
of combining formal study and first hand experience to ensure that
students achieve both a well-informed and personalized approach to
peace studies. With this in mind, the Global University, with its
unique approach to peace education, was created.
On each voyage there is a number of study modules on offer, each focusing
on either a regional conflict, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict
or the Balkan conflict, or an issue of global concern, such as the
environment or human rights. Each module takes place during a section
of the voyage, during which experts from around the world join the
ship to offer onboard lectures and workshops. Study programmes in
the ports of call during that section of the voyage complement the
onboard study, while longer exposure tours, which leave the ship in
one port, spend an extended period of time on land, and then return
to the ship at the following port, provide an opportunity to experience
first-hand one of the regions under focus through a comprehensive
range of study and exchange activities.
The modules on offer are open to everyone onboard, and participants
may take one or more of them, depending on their personal interests.
Those who take all the modules offered onboard, and who follow up
their study with either a written report or an 'action project' receive
a Global University certificate of completion. Action projects allow
students to share what they have learned with other participants,
with local people in the ports of call and with people back home through
surveys, photography exhibitions, video documentaries and discussion
sessions.
The Global University is divided into an English-language and a Japanese-language
programme. Both are open to everyone onboard. |
