◆Closing Words

The Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty was adopted at the United Nations on 7 July of this year. More than 60% of the UN's member nations voted in favor of this treaty, and this historical movement to legally prohibit nuclear weapons is something that the Hibakusha of Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been working towards for a long time. On 20 September, the signing of this treaty will commence at the United Nations General Assembly. The Nuclear Age has reached a crossroads. However, the nuclear powers have turned their backs on this movement, and the Japanese government announced that they would not participate in this treaty. The world is still in danger of an imminent nuclear threat, as North Korea continues to intimidate East Asia with its nuclear and missile testing, and relations between the US and Russia continue to deteriorate. What can be done by governments and the United Nations in this current situation? What can the citizens of Japan do? We hope to address these questions at this event, a few days before the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on 26 September.
