Reconciliation and Understanding in Northeast Asia
Japan has failed to atone for the country's past military aggression in Asia-Pacific, its colonization and military invasions of neighboring countries and the human rights abuses and war crimes committed in this period. Thus, the teaching of history in this region is intensely politicized and divisive. To overcome these issues, Peace Boat works to examine differences in understanding history in Northeast Asia, through involvement in projects including the creation of a common history textbook for Northeast Asia, support for former Japanese military sexual slaves ("Comfort Women") and raising awareness about the issue of Yasukuni Shrine.
