Jul 2, 2013 - Peace Boat hosts the El Sistema Brass Ensemble in Japan and onboard the ship!
Ten young musicians from the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra known as "El Sistema" will come to Japan in July 2013 to hold a series of concerts in Hiroshima, Yokohama and Tokyo in collaboration with Peace Boat.

The youth will arrive in Japan on July 12, and will spend time learning about the history of Hiroshima, meeting Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) and holding concerts together with the Hiroshima University Symphony Orchestra as well as in Yokohama and Tokyo. Following their time in Japan they will take part in Peace Boat's 80th Global Voyage for Peace.

"El Sistema," the short name for the Simón Bolívar Music Foundation (Fundación Musical Simon Bolivar) is the governing body of the National System of Youth and Children's Orchestras and Choirs of Venezuela. It was founded 37 years ago by maestro José Antonio Abreu, for the purpose of systematizing music education and promoting the collective practice of music through symphony orchestras and choruses as a means of social organization and community development. Peace Boat has been working together with El Sistema since 2007, hosting musicians onboard the ship and delivering musical instruments to support the programmes.

The youth musicians' upcoming visit to Japan is a rare chance to meet them in person, enjoy their overflowing talent, and feel their energy and how much music has contributed to their lives and the development of their communities.
