Jan 12, 2018 - ICAN Executive Director Beatrice Fihn Visits Japan
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize "for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons."

ICAN's Executive Director, Ms. Beatrice Fihn, at the invitation of the University of Nagasaki, is visiting Japan from 12 January 2018 to participate in a series of events in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Tokyo to highlight the urgent need for global nuclear disarmament. Taking place in Tokyo on 16 January 2018, the following events include a press conference, discussion with representatives of each Japanese political party and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a symposium with Mr. Kawasaki Akira, Peace Boat Executive Committee Member and ICAN International Steering Group Member and other special guests to be announced.

Ms. Fihn will use this opportunity to discuss the significance of the nuclear question in relation to Japanese society, as well as the reasons behind the Japanese government's reluctance to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, despite Japan being the only country to have suffered a wartime nuclear attack.
