A-Bomb Survivors who Appealed for Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty Return to Yokohama on Peace Boat's 94th Global Voyage

On July 25, 2017, Peace Boat's 94th Global Voyage will return to the port of Yokohama. The Voyage departed from Japan on April 12, and sailed through 24 ports in 23 countries with nearly 1000 passengers onboard.

The 10th "Global Voyage for a Nuclear-Free World: Peace Boat Hibakusha Project" was held on this voyage. Hibakusha (atomic-bomb survivors) from Hiroshima and Nagasaki travelled around the world with second-generation Hibakusha and "Youth Communicators for a Nuclear-Free World." In each place visited, they shared their testimony of the experience of the atomic bombings to communicate the horror of nuclear weapons, and the urgency of their prohibition.

Taking place as governments from around the world gathered at the United Nations to negotiate a treaty banning nuclear weapons, Hibakusha met with senior government officials, members of parliament and political leaders around the world to call for their support of the treaty, and active participation in negotiations. High level meetings were held in Greece, Italy, Spain, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. The Hibakusha also had exchanges with survivors of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and of chemical weapons from Iran.

Notably, a delegation of Hibakusha travelled to New York in June, where they directly participated in the nuclear ban treaty negotiations. The project members welcomed the July 7 conclusion of the treaty, soon after they departed New York for the remainder of their voyage around the globe.
