Sep 21, 2012 - Peace Boat marks the International Day of Peace 2012
Atomic bomb survivors travelling on Peace Boat share their testimony at the International Day of Peace event in Cairo
21 September is the UN International Day of Peace (IDP), a day to celebrate, honour, remember and observe peace and cease fire throughout the world. Peace Boat marks this day annually with a range of events both in Japan and also as the ship travels on its global voyages, aiming to raise global awareness of the importance of peace and conflict prevention.

In 2012, Peace Boat's 77th Global Voyage was docked in Egypt at the time of the International Day of Peace, and Peace Boat joined together with the Netherlands based peace movement MasterPeace to hold a public event at Cairo University. Entitled "Meet the Hibakusha," 200 people gathered to view an exhibition about the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings, and hear first hand testimony from Mr Miyake Nobuo and Ms Sugino Nobuko, both Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) from Hiroshima travelling onboard Peace Boat. The Peace Boat delegation also included students from Fukushima University, who are participating in education and cultural exchange programmes as they travel the globe onboard Peace Boat.

Hibakusha Miyake Nobuo interviewed by the Egyptian media
Following the panel from Peace Boat, three Egyptian leaders and experts shared their visions, ideas and opinions about the current situation in the Middle East through an inclusive dialogue. This was an invaluable opportunity for all participants, including many youth and students, to learn about the humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons and develop social awareness and responsibility on sensitive issues. A press conference, media interviews and cultural activities also took place throughout the day. See more about the "Meet the Hibakusha" event here, and more details will be posted on this page shortly.

Many members of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), of which Peace Boat acts as Regional Secretariat for Northeast Asia, have also organized events and festivities for the International Day of Peace.
