Jan 1, 2019 - Wishing You A Peaceful New Year 2019!
Peace Boat celebrated our 35th anniversary in 2018, and we were honoured to work with our friends and partners around the world towards a more peaceful, sustainable and nuclear-free world.

Following the awarding of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), of which Peace Boat is an international steering group member, we began 2018 with a voyage around Australia, the country where ICAN was founded. Through the nation-wide speaking tour "Making Waves" we delivered the voices of people affected by the nuclear chain, including atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, nuclear refugees from Fukushima, and Australian indigenous community members impacted by nuclear testing and nuclear waste. Since then the Nobel Peace Prize medal and diploma awarded to Peace Boat have been travelling onboard subsequent voyages as part of the Peace Boat Hibakusha Project, demonstrating that this medal really belongs to people all around the world working for nuclear weapons abolition.

Peace Boat continued its work as a committed campaigner for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During our visit to Koror in March, our ship was the first to have all onboard sign the Palau Pledge - a world-first eco-initiative that asks all inbound visitors to Palau to make a promise, directly to its children, to protect their home during their stay to help preserve Palau's fragile environment and culture for the next generation.

Our ship visited New York in July during the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The inaugural Partnership Expo held onboard, together with several UN agencies, highlighted the importance of partnerships for transformation towards sustainable and resilient societies, and showcased initiatives and commitments towards achieving the SDGs. At a side event at the United Nations, the second cohort of Peace Boat Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors presented, and an MoU with UN SDG Action Campaign for joint activities to raise awareness of the SDGs through Peace Boat.

This year also saw great leaps forward for peace in our region, with the historic Inter-Korean Summits and a new hope for a nuclear-free Northeast Asia. Peace Boat has continued to contribute to peace and disarmament in the region, through our coordination of the Northeast Asian process of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) and an ongoing civil society dialogue process involving participants from both Koreas and the broader region.

We are excited to announce that our 100th Global Voyage has just set sail from Japan on December 26, 2018.

We hope that we can continue to share this journey with you all, and work together in partnership for a peaceful, sustainable and nuclear-free world in the coming year.

Thank you from all the team at Peace Boat!
