Oct 4, 2016 - Disarm! For a Climate of Peace - the International Peace Bureau World Congress 2016
The International Peace Bureau (IPB) World Congress 2016, under the main theme "Disarm! For a Climate of Peace" was held in Berlin from September 30 to October 3, 2016, attended by more than 1000 participants from 80 countries. A Peace Boat delegation took an active role in the Congress, as well as in the IPBfs Triennial Assembly, as a member of its international section.

The main subjects of the IPB World Congress 2016 were related to the various aspects of the current disarmament process, from global military spending, arms production and trade, to how to make the transition from military to civil industry, how to tax military industry, how to define new security system in the disarmament process, and the most important - how enormous amounts of financial means from the military industry and national military budgets could be used for sustainable development and peace, and to make our world safe for all.

One of the main military threats, the existence of nuclear weapons, was discussed widely and initiatives of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Peace Boat and other anti-nuclear weapons groups, together with the diplomatic initiative of 127 states to have a treaty banning nuclear weapons, were widely supported and endorsed. The testimonies of Hibakusha, survivors of nuclear attacks in Japan, Mr Tanaka Terumi and Mr Sakuma Kunihiko, made a great impact on participants of the World Congress and delivered a strong public warning on the terrific, devastating and inhuman consequences of use of nuclear weapons.

The IPB World Congress 2016 in Berlin marked new visions and new channels of action in the process of disarmament, with concrete suggestions and plans for how military spending could be allocated to civil purposes, the new national and international legal measures needed, the creation of a new global ethical code of conduct for scientists, and for an international fund for peace initiatives generated from reduction of military spending.

"The world is over-armed & peace is under-funded", the famous quote of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, was the main slogan of the IPB World Congress 2016, the largest peace gathering in 2016.
