Nov 27, 2016 - Global University Alumna Thevuni Kotigala (Sri Lanka) as Member of the UN Advisory Group of Experts for the Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security
Peace Boat is pleased and proud to announce that Thevuni Kotigala, Global University alumna from Sri Lanka, has been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon as a member of the Advisory Group of Experts for the Progress Study on Youth, Peace and Security, mandated by the Security Council in its Resolution 2250.

Thevuni visited Peace Boat US Office in New York, during her time there for the Advisory Group Meeting.

Thevuni participated in the October 2014 Global University Programme, on "Social Cohesion in Multiethnic Asia: Nurturing Leaders for the Next Generation." With her own experience of living through the civil war in Sri Lanka which lasted until 2009, Thevuni contributed to discussions in ways that made other students aware of the painful complexities inevitably part of conflicts and conflict resolution efforts.

Thevuni has long been an active member of Sri Lanka Unites, a youth movement which works to build authentic reconciliation through inter-faith activities. Her appointment as a member of this UN advisory group is a proof that young people can make valuable contributions to the building of peace and resilience, and that the world needs more such young people who can devote themselves to local, national and global initiatives for peace and sustainability.

In sharing this wonderful piece of news with Peace Boat staff, Thevuni wrote: "Peace Boat is the turning point of my life and it really equipped me with so much knowledge and confidence." It is a true delight to know that our alumni are affecting change in the world, and that they see their participation in the Peace Boat programme as a key events impacting their life and work!
