Peace Boat staff Meri Joyce presents Women Cross DMZ
Peace Boat staff participated in the autumn 2015 conference of the Peace Studies Association of Japan (PSAJ) held at the University of the Ryukyus, Okinawa on November 28-29, 2015. In a panel focusing on security in East Asia from a gender perspective, International Coordinator Meri Joyce presented the Women Cross DMZ initiative. In May 2015, Meri participated in this delegation of 30 women peacemakers from around the world, including Nobel Peace laureates Mairead Maguire and Leymah Gbowee, who crossed the heavily militarised DMZ from North to South Korea to call for an end to the Korean War, reunification of families and women's leadership in the peace process.

Panel discussion on security in East Asia
On the same panel, Peace Boat executive committee member Kawasaki Akira introduced the activities of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC) in Northeast Asia - the secretariat of which is hosted by Peace Boat. In particular, he spoke about the background, overview and significance of the Ulaanbaatar Process, a civil society led dialogue on peace and security issues in the region, officially launched in June of this year.
The session was facilitated by Kimijima Akihiko of Ritsumeikan University, and was an opportunity to discuss with both panelists and participants of a long-term vision for peace in Northeast Asia, and the importance of leadership and initiatives led by NGOs and civil society in the region.

Former Prime Minister Hatoyama joins a panel on an East Asian Community and Okinawa
Former Prime Minister of Japan Hatoyama Yukio also participated in the conference, presenting a lecture on his vision of an East Asia Community. He also expressed his solidarity with the movement to prevent construction of a new military base in Henoko, Okinawa. This was widely reported by the media, including the Okinawa Times and Ryukyu Shimpo.
