Sep 11, 2014 - Peace Boat participates in Asia-Europe People's Forum (AEPF) meeting on Peace & Security in Hanoi

Peace Boat participated in the Asia Europe People's Forum (AEPF) Thematic Conference on Peace and Security, "Peace and Security in Asia & Europe" held in Hanoi, Viet Nam on September 9-10, 2014.

AEPF is an interregional network of progressive civil society organisations across Asia and Europe. The first AEPF interregional conference was organised in 1996 on the occasion of the first Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) held in Bangkok, the official meeting between heads of state of the European Union and 16 Asian countries. Since then People's Forums have been held biennially as an Alternative Summit to the ASEM, and AEPF has assumed the unique function of fostering people's solidarity across the two regions, becoming a vehicle for advancing the people's voice within Asia-Europe relations. Peace Boat is involved in the organising committee of the Peace & Security cluster of the AEPF - one of the main themes along with socially just trade and investment; universal social protection; food sovereignty and sustainable land and natural resource management; climate justice, sustainable energy production and zero waste.

The 10th Asia-Europe Peoples' Forum will be held in Milan, Italy between 10-12 October, 2014, with the title of "Towards a Just and Inclusive Asia and Europe - Building States of Citizens for Citizens." In preparation for this, several thematic conferences are being held in Europe and Asia to set the agenda and programme for the Milan meeting. In Hanoi, discussions were held on military spending and arms transfers; nuclear weapons and weapons of mass destruction; conflict prevention and peaceful conflict resolution; gender and identity relations; and killer drones, robots and military bases. The summary of discussions and detailed programme for the AEPF Milan conference will be uploaded on the Asia-Europe People's Forum website soon.
