Nov 9, 2016 - Peace Boat's Ecoship Project at COP22 to push green agenda in the maritime industry
Peace Boat will again this year be present during the annual Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP). The 22nd Session (COP22) is being held in Marrakech, Morocco from November 7 to 18, 2016. The conference will take over the reins from COP21, during which important progress was made. It will focus on action items in order to achieve the priorities of the Paris Agreement, especially related to adaptation, transparency, technology transfer, mitigation, capacity building and loss and damages. During the two weeks, Peace Boat will be present in the different exhibition areas and will organize an event to promote the green agenda in the maritime industry, as well as its related activities. The international NGO will also be present at the 7th Sustainable Innovation Forum (SIF16), the largest business-focused event held during COP, on 15-16 November.

The Ecoship
Peace Boat's Ecoship project is working to push the green agenda forward within the maritime industry, and demonstrate the potential of eco-centric designs. The Ecoship project was first launched in 2014 as a response to the global cruise boom -particularly in the Asian cruise market. The project is now working towards the design and construction of an environmentally-friendly cruise ship that far outstrips the green credentials of the current best-in-class.

The project is now at the stage of taking bids for construction of the vessel, and is now in the process of design consultation with DNV GL, a partner with whom Peace Boat signed a Memorandum of Understanding at SMM in September, following original design work from Spanish firm Oliver Design. The contract for the build of the vessel is due to enter into force in 2017, with delivery scheduled for 2020.

Peace Boat's Ecoship Project will be exhibiting in the Green Zone, Bab Ighli, Civil Society Area, at Booth C359.

Promoting Resilience and Global SDGs
During COP22, Peace Boat will organize a side event called "Action for Climate: Promoting Resilience and the Global SDGs". Peace Boat has been working to assist disaster-affected people and strengthen disaster resilience of communities in Japan and around the world since 1995. This work highlights the devastation caused by global warming, particularly threatening small island states. The most recent manifestation of this is Hurricane Matthew in Haiti. With a rise in post-disaster health and sanitation challenges (e.g. cholera), the need for strengthening communities' abilities to cope with these hazards is as urgent as ever. Peace Boat Disaster Relief Volunteer Center (PBV) has dispatched staff to Haiti, and is now preparing a long-term project to make a major impact through capacity building of communities with training and education.

At the same time, Peace Boat is a committed campaigner for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and with the cooperation of the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) is proud to have launched a huge Global Goals logo on the hull of its ship at the departure of the 92nd Global Voyage from Japan on August 18, 2016. This logo is now travelling around the world to promote the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the SDGs throughout a three-month journey, travelling to 25 ports during this voyage, and more than 80 countries around the world annually. In this event, Peace Boat will also introduce the Ecoship. This ship will be a flagship for climate action and will also establish collaboration with entities such as the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). The common goal is to raise awareness of climate change and take actions to tackle this urgent challenge.

The event will take place in the Green Zone, Bab Ighli, Room 2, on November 14 from 19:00 - 20:30 pm.

SIF16
During COP22, a large business-focused event will take place on 14-15 November at the Four Seasons Marrakech: the Sustainable Innovation Forum. The 2-day Forum will convene cross-sector participants from business, government, finance, the UN, NGOs and civil society to create an opportunity to bolster sustainable innovation and bring scale to the emerging green economy. Over 1000 attendees representing 50 countries will attend, bringing together an excellent mix of speakers and participants. Peace Boat Director, Yoshioka Tatsuya, will speak at this event.
