Dec 15, 2015 - Peace Boat Takes Part in Asia-Europe Foundation Summits in Luxembourg and Bulgaria
Peace Boat was honoured for a member of its staff to be selected to participate in the Asia Europe Foundation (ASEF) Young Leaders Summit (#ASEFYLS) held recently in Luxembourg, November 1-5, 2015. Robin Lewis, International Coordinator of Peace Boat's disaster risk reduction activities, attended the summit as one of the Japanese delegates, amongst 100 young people from 51 countries. Focusing on youth employment and entrepeneurship, the event gis for young thinkers and doers to question and explore how the entrepreneurial vein can trigger and nourish job-creation, mobility and social cohesion in Asia and Europe."

The youth representatives jointly developed a Call for Action addressed to the ASEM Governments. As the summit was being held in conjunction with the 12th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting (ASEM FMM12), this outcome document was presented to the H.E. Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, at the ASEM FMM12 Opening Ceremony on November 5.

Following on from the summit in Luxembourg, Robin was selected as one of four young people to participate in the 5th ASEM Labour and Employment Ministers Conference in Bulgaria one month later, from December 1-4, 2015. Held on the theme of "Towards Sustainable Social Development in Asia and Europe: A joint Vision for Decent Work and Social Protection," Robin and the fellow youth delegates joined discussions to ensure that young people and their opinions were not left out of the conversation/political process.

The delegates had the opportunity to meet with H.E. Ivailo Kalfin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour and Social Policy of the Republic of Bulgaria. Furthermore, at a meeting at the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Robin was able to express thanks on behalf of Peace Boat for their support at the time of Peace Boat's call to the port of Bourgas during the 75th Global Voyage in 2012.

Peace Boat looks forward to continuing its cooperation with the Asia Europe Foundation, including in such symposiums and youth programmes, as well as during the ship's visits to Singapore, where we have been honoured to work with ASEF on various education and culture related activities.
